10:09 pm - My very first Opera
Enjoyed watching an Opera last night, it was wonderful. There's a mad house full of strange people, who happen to have amazingly powerful voices, so insead of talking, they have dramatic conversations via song. Then some more, with repetition, just in case the point was lost. Then another person walks into the room, and even though surely they must be able to hear the singing miles down the road, there's a repeat performance to keep everyone up to speed. Did I mention the full orchestra in the basement as well?
At first the music seems overwhelming. How do you control fifty different people simultaneously playing their fifty different instruments? Then after a while you're entranced by the singing, and you only hear the softly fading final beats of the music, engulfed by the applause at the end. The voices are amazing.
The highlight of the night was a scandalous show of leg, complete with what looked like suspenders, during an impromptu dance by one of the male singers. I was giggling throughout the intermission, I think I had nightmares about it, but I'll never forget my first dose of glorious Opera. :)

09:50 pm
Refined my fabulous research skills by checking out two new pubs in two successive nights. Which of course involved trying out both their cocktail menus. Tasty and delicious! Fruit cocktails are healthy for you right?
In other news car is all good at the moment. Birthday month got boring with work, but the second half looks to be exciting. Two parties down, lots more to come! :)

So all my smoke-smelling clothes from the weekend are washed, folded and tucked back into my drawer. I hope I there's some more fun coming along soon!

11:15 pm - First birthday month party
Awesome! Spent day in front of computer. Tried on pointy girly shoes. Feet hurtage after walking from bedroom to bathroom. Removed shoes of torture. Found something pretty in roommates closest. Walked into a cloud of blossoming perfume. Sneezed. Doused myself with glitter. Coughed. Spent a lifetime at the bus stop. Walked around rocks. Wandered past same corner three times. Followed music to the right pub.
Drank. Danced. Badly. Needed to drink more to hide embarassment. Collapsed into taxi at end of night.
Awesome!

01:31 pm - Excellent
Today's excitingness was having a great talk with my boss about the next few months work. We also found some annoying C bugs in my code, yay!
Another night glaring at that function would have carried the gentle whispering sound of a piece of straw snapping in two.

11:04 pm - Welcome to birthday month!
Birthday month is very cool. I think birthdays should be celebrated on a monthly basis. This means it's compulsary to do something fun/new/exciting everyday for 31 days. That's a lot of fun!
Today I enjoyed some delicious lamingtons that were delivered right to my door by my fantastic housemate. This is known as pre-party party food. And it lasts for a month. :)

10:24 pm - He's watching!
There's a rash of signs along the highway with a jolly picture of the grim reaper standing next to a corner roadsign. Be careful though, he's a tricky fellow and sometimes the corners are pointing the wrong way!

10:50 pm - The bad
The worst parts of my day were
* its been 55 hours and counting since my last taste of a ground coffee bean.
* my computer hibernates, which is good, but then it doesn't wake up again, which is bad.

05:55 pm - This entry is for my car.
My car has burst two pipes now, I think he wants some extra attention. So here it is!
Obvious signs you have burst a pipe
* A squealing sound coming from the direction of the engine that sounds like a balloon as big as the car is deflating. Fast.
* Bright green liquid pouring from under the bonnet. Which is bad pollution for some nice beach around sydney.
* Smoke drifting up from the bonnet, obscuring the driver's vision.
* Antifreeze splattering onto the windscreen, obscuring the passenger's vision.
* Bad clunking noises erupting when the accelerator is in use.
* Not being able to listen to the radio with all the racket going on!
It keeps happening when I drive over the bridge. Which is about the worst place to pull your car over before your engine overheats and catches fire.

02:19 pm - Warning! Non coffee fanatics can skip this enrty.
So I was sitting in a lecture theatre listening to a seminar about espresso coffee. Makes a nice change from the usual lectures. :)
I learnt some good info that I will forget unless I write it down:
- espresso coffee is about extracting the coffee oils from the beans. On an espresso machine this should take about 25 seconds for the water to seep through the ground coffee. Much longer and you start releasing the bitter toxins from the bean. Filtered water is better so it doesn't interfere with the taste.
- extracting should happen at 80 - 90 degs. So cool down the water in the machine after frothing the milk (should be just too hot to touch bottom of metal jug), and warm your cups etc before you use them. Cold espresso or burnt coffee tastes bad. This also means coffee in fridge is bad. Keep it somewhere dry, cool and dark.
- Grind coffee just before you use it. Beans are stale after about 24 hours of exposure, ground coffee after 4 hours. Stale coffee also tastes bad.
- Blend is just about the taste. Roasting is how long you cook the little beans for.
- Set up your grind against your water pressure. Fine grinds take longer for the water to seep through, so high pressures are needed to force the water through. Course grinds make it easier for water to seep through. Again, if the grind is too fine it will take too long to extract the oils and the espresso will taste bitter.
- Remember temperature and grind! (They said this a lot, yay for repetition)
Now I need to come visit someone with a coffee machine. :)

07:36 pm - How to fail a maths test
"Eighty per cent of our customers are women and around 20 per cent are men."
That's a quote I found today from a company describing their customer base. Last week the people responsible for counting the votes from a popular reality show miscalculated. Ok, triple integration is hard, basic addition is not. Fear computers and their grasp of basic mathematics!

06:15 pm - Confession Time
I like talking through movies. And dumb TV shows and the news and video clips and ads. I know it annoys everybody but I don't understand how to passively watch something.
It's fun to laugh at the characters and to argue against the underlying messages we're fed through the media. I like throwing popcorn at bad acting, trying out the silly king fu moves and critising the bad hair days of the past. Rehearsing quotes from other movies over and over and over again...
I'd love to have another movie night soon. Bring on the popcorn!

11:42 pm - Sub-tle hints
So I saw a wedding cake that was made entirely of donuts on TV yesterday. You can guess which ultra special magical I'll stand in line for half an hour just to eat lard kind they were. Good thing I was gyming at the time. Great incentive to pedal faster!

02:52 pm - Ja cars are dangerous
As I walk around the car to get to the drivers side I notice that the back tyre is looking flat. Not in a slighlt twinge of guilt I should fix that next time I buy some petrol way. More like I'm trying to think whether I have any enemies and if they know how to slash a tyre and make it look like an accident kind of way. And I reiterate the need to memorise the NRMA road service number.
Crossed all available appendages possible whilst still driving a car, and three service stations later I find one that both advertises and delivers on having a working air pump. On the last tire I lose the little air vent lid-top behind the hubcap. A hand of oily fingers later the hubcap is off, possibly never to be re-united with the wheel and I find it again. Bent.
My last cheery thought for the night is that if computers ran on petrol and needing filling with air every couple of weeks, I would be doomed.
